Evaluation

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Both our front and middle page’s follow the usual conventions of local newspapers.
For instance, our title ‘Wigan World’ we have ‘world’ bigger with ‘Wigan’ resting above it. We did this because this follows the norm for local newspapers. As well as this we noticed that most have block colours behind the title to make the title bold and stand out to the audience

This is my final logo for my newspaper, as you can see there is a clear influence from the ‘Wigan Evening Post’ to an extent with the colour scheme but particularly the layout. We liked this layout the best as it is simple but effective. We used the black strip to make the ‘Wigan’ look more effective as it is small we still needed to make it stand out so we thought the black strip enabled us to do this. Overall my logo uses typical conventions of a newspaper logo

This is an existing newspaper of what I modelled my front page around. I followed all of the conventions such as the logo in the top left corner, an advertising banner underneath the logo, a banner advert at the bottom of the paper but we placed the second story to the right instead of the left.
We stuck to the layout as we believed it was simple to do and we liked the layout of the articles. As well as this, having a main image with a large headline underneath it and a small section of the story to the right. A sub story to the right isn’t that common in newspapers but it looked good so we decided to keep it. There is usually adverts in newspapers in the positions we placed them so we decided to stick to those conventions.

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The first thing we created for our project was the logo. We decided on the colour scheme of the logo and we would use this colour scheme on the rest of the newspaper. We even decided to use it on our ancillary products e.g. poster. We chose red, white and black as the three primary colours. A lot of newspapers use red and white for example local papers such as the Wigan reporter and tabloid newspapers such as The Sun.

As you can see we stuck to mainly three colours. In our poster red and black were the main colours and in the newspaper all three colours were used. When planning out the products we decided that we must stick to the three main colours, but occasionally bringing other colours in. The grey on the poster looked better than a white background. We also tried to keep the font styles more a less the same, especially the logo and headline fonts.
We originally had the same the slogan on the poster and on the newspaper this linked the products together. The slogan was 'Giving you a clearer view of the news.' Even though the newspaper now has a different slogan they still did link together. But the Newspaper and radio advert link in well together because the slogan 'bringing the news closer to home' is mentioned in both products. In the radio advert I say the slogan at the end of the radio advert, this clearly links the products together.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

The main way audience feedback helped me was the choice between a globe or glasses on the poster and the choice of headline for our second main news story, in order to receive feedback I uploaded our two posters to facebook and got our friends to comment and give their input. For the news story we asked our media class for their input and gave them choices of headlines. We also used twitter to ask people which poster did they prefer. We did used twitter and facebook because they are massive social networking sites and nearly everyone has an account on one or the other.

This feedback states that the poster with the glasses on is much better than the poster with globe on. The main reason being that the poster with the glasses on looks more professional than the one with the globe on. The slogan on the glasses one sounds better and makes more sense.

4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Creating poster image

To create our radio advert we used audacity and Adobe premier Pro to record and edit our radio advert. We did several recording of it to get it right, but even when we got it wrong we could edit the bad bits out on adobe premiere

The main technologies I used when creating my products were photo editing software such as Photoshop. I used them for a number of things through out my project such as:

My logo, I created this in Photoshop before transferring it onto my newspaper. I chose to create this in Photoshop as it has more artistic and accurate tools. We used Kozuka gothic pro for the word Wigan and World. I put my text in a red and black box to make the White font clearly stand out.

I created my whole poster in Photoshop as its much more effective for a visual piece as it has a wider variety of tools.

Another technology I used was facebook, I used this for feedback on my products which I discussed earlier in question. 3. I also used YouTube regularly in my project for both research and to host my radio adverts...

Our Radio Advert

We came up with our own Radio advert and were influenced by other radio adverts. We decided that we needed a catchy jingle in the background. We found a song by the band, The Prodigy called Stand up. It was a very catchy tune and had an advert feel to it. We used two speakers which discussed on how one person had heard about the local gossip.

Production Newspaper

We decided that we use a layout like the one above and this was would be our planned layout. We had also decided on the Main Headline which would be about a young local tennis star qualifying for Wimbledon. We would go down to the local tennis club and take some pictures of our chosen person in a tennis outfit and with a tennis racket. The Headline would be half interview and also half of an informative piece.

We decided to change our tennis idea and decided to go with a more serious story. We decided to go with a Kidnap story. We found a picture of a friend of ours and used it as the main picture on the front page. We also came up with ideas for a secondary story on the front page and also another big story on the second page. We had a few general idea's, we decided it would be quite a big story if a immigrant committed a serious crime. We also decided that we would use a smaller story on the front page and that it would be about grave robbery. We decided to use that story because it was quite an eye catching story and rare.

Here's what our main and secondary looked like when it was finished. It takes influences mainly from the Wigan Reporter, with the red and black colour scheme. We used a Kidnapping story and used a simple headline because we thought it would be more effective.

We also took a picture of a graveyard from Orrell graveyard. We found a grave what looked slightly dug up so it fitted the story description.

We also decided that we would need to take pictures for our advertisements on both pages. We decided to include a competition on the front page, so we took a picture of some cash. We also created a logo for a local bakery on paint. We thought a logo would look more effective rather than a picture of some bread or a pie.

We also included a Local football score in the corner, we got this influence from other local newspapers which usually include a sprt related story on the front page.

We saw a lot of holiday advertisements in the local and national newspapers, so we decided that we would include a holiday advert on the second page. We used a picture from my Holiday to crotia of a luxury apartment. For the last advert we came up with the idea to advertise a adverture farm for children. We went to a local farm and took a picture of some horses that were on show.

Here are the advertisements used on the second page of our newspaper. Fun Farm and Wigan travel. We feel that these advertisements look realistic.

We decided to develop a story on a Polish rapist, we decided that this would be a controversial story. We took a picture of Ryan and portrayed him as the rapist.

We then put all of these Story's and advertisements together to produce a final product of Wigan World Newspaper. Here it is

Research Into Headlines

We came to the decision that we would do a sporting Headline but a positive one. Possibly a Local sportsman who has won a competition or is about to take part in something special e.g. Wimbledon , Golf Opens or a PPV boxing match.

Research Newspaper Posters

One of our tasks is to create a poster for our Newspaper. We looked at past blogs from Winstanley College and found the groups who did the same task as us. We found a very good poster for a local newspaper. It includes a slogan and a picture which matches the slogan, it looked very clever and effective. We noticed that the price seems to be very important, it is included on most Newspapers and it is also included on this poster. We notice that most Newspapers are kept cheap. The poster gave us some interesting idead for our own poster.

This is also another example of a Newspaper poster ad. The rainford observer, this also use a slogan and a picture to match the slogan which seems to be very effective.
